Re: Council contemplates heritage designation, Nov. 23.

Congratulations to writer Teresa Latchford for exposing this vile stupidity and to the sane members of Newmarket council who voted down a proposal to designate a private residence a heritage site without the property owner’s involvement.

One of the joys of being Canadian is the opportunity to choose to work hard and provide a home for yourself and your family without the government mucking about with your property rights.

The town contacted the owner, Peter Sturrup, about whether or not he was interested in the designation. The owner declined.

Regardless of the owner’s decision, Councillor Joe Sponga decided council should vote on the matter without consulting Mr. Sturrup.

Kudos to Councillor Dave Kerwin for calling this attempt for what it is.

When politicians get to make decisions about an individual’s property without consultation, you have the makings of a government that does not take into account the needs or desires of the citizens that put it in place.

Mr. Sponga based his proposal on an assumption that maybe, at some time in the future, changes may be made that affect the perception of the property.

Does the councillor subscribe to the psychic “services” of Miss Cleo?

Newmarket voters should make note of Mr. Sponga’s intent and remember it the next time council is elected.

Canada is a free country, yet Mr. Sponga’s proposal is completely contrary to that reality.  Perhaps he could run for council in the People’s Republic of Toronto.
