Re: New rules tough, but worth it, Nov. 20.
I can fully understand the reason of the zero tolerance for no blood alcohol level whatsoever. I do not drink and am completely against it, as are all of my close friends.
I am 17 and I drive a lot.
I have a few close friends that live farther away than others around town and we cannot always rely on our parents to drive us everywhere.
We love extreme sports, we snowboard in the wintertime and wakeboard in the summertime. We have to travel certain distances to do so. A law that does not allow more than one passenger in the vehicle would completely destroy our dreams and ability to have a recreational pastime.
We are good drivers. We have all taken the Young Drivers course and respect the rules of the road.
If they take our licences away, it’s going to ruin our plans, even if it’s only for 30 days, which means almost one-third of our snowboarding season is gone.
I will not be able to see some of my friends and I will not even be able to see my girlfriend. I am in a long-distance relationship and it is hard enough as it is not being able to see her very often.
Yes, there are bad drivers out there. There are people who are just living to party, but not all of us are like that.
These laws neglect the ability to carpool, to save money on gas and to reduce harmful fossil fuel emissions.
There are thousands of people protesting this law. We are all doing anything we can to try to stop it.
We have 15,000 signatures online opposing this proposed law. There is also going to be a protest Dec. 20 at Queen’s Park.
I don’t know if any of this is going to stop the law from being passed, but we have to try.
