Everyone is invited to come celebrate the life of former Whitchurch-Stouffville citizen of the year Gladys Clarkson, who died Oct. 31.
The Memory Day takes place Sunday at Stouffville’s Royal Canadian Legion from 1 to 2:30 p.m.
Refreshments will be served and any funds raised by the event will go to the branch, Legion’s Ladies Auxiliary to Branch 459, Whitchurch-Stouffville Strawberry Festival, 1st Stouffville Cubs and Scouts and the Whitchurch-Stouffville Museum.
Citizen of the year in 1984, Mrs. Clarkson was a volunteer for more than 50 years with several Stouffville organizations including Royal Canadian Legion Branch 459, the Whitchurch-Stouffville Museum and 1st Stouffville Cubs and Scouts.
She was a founding member of the Ladies Auxiliary to Branch 459, the Silver Jubilee Club for seniors, the Friendship Club and the Whitchurch-Stouffville Strawberry Festival.
She received the Palm Leaf Award, the highest honour that can be bestowed on a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, last year at a tea in her honour. She helped to prepare and serve the legion’s famous luncheons for many years.
The oldest of 12 children, Mrs. Clarkson was predeceased by her husband, Anthony Robert (Bert) Clarkson.
She is survived by her children, Carol (Rolly) Scott, Blair, Beth and Jane (Rick George), nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
