Annual youth art show keeps growing

The creativity of students across Markham will be display on Dec. 5 and 6 during the Markham Art Expo at the Varley Art Gallery.

The annual event, presented by the Mayor’s Youth Task Force, is in its sixth year.  The exhibit is entirely student organized.  The task force raises awareness on important youth issues, including bullying, in Markham and demonstrates what youth have to offer to the community.  

The exhibit has grown dramatically since its inception.

“When we first started we had two or three schools participating and less than 100 pieces.  

“Now, all the public schools in Markham are donating art and we have approximately 350 pieces,” said Jason Tsien, community resource coordinator for the Town of Markham.  

Those 350 pieces are comprised of paintings, photography, sculptures and film.  Student teams are making short films to be screened on Friday, Dec. 5, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Varley Art Gallery.  They must be filmed within Markham and contain the theme of self-expression.

While the volume of submissions has increased every year, so has the attendance.  

“Friday is our big night,” Mr Tsien said.  Between 100 and 200 visitors are expected.
