The Markham Waxers did plenty of celebrating at Centennial Arena Thursday.
Prior to the start of their Ontario Junior Hockey League game against the Cobourg Cougars, the Waxers unveiled their South Conference and South-East Conference championship banners they claimed last season.
To add icing to the cake, the Waxers also skated off with a hard-fought 2-1 win over the Cougars to extend their winning streak to seven games and share first place honours with the Hamilton Red Wings.
Improving their record to 16 wins, one overtime win, two shootout wins and eight losses for 38 points, the Waxers also have two games in hand on the Red Wings.
Dylan O’Neil accounted for both Waxers goals with the game-winner occurring at the 1:48-mark of the third period on a power play.
Waxers’ goalkeeper Chris Azzano stopped 27 of 28 shots to help preserve the win.
The Waxers directed 38 shots on the Cougars’ net.
After yesterday’s road game against the St. Michael’s Buzzers, the Waxers will face the Toronto Junior Canadiens Sunday at Chesswood Arena in North York at 7:30 p.m.
