Jordan Belchos moved up two spots into ninth place in the ISU World Cup speed skating rankings after his performance in Heerenveen, Holland last weekend.
Competing in his second ISU World Cup race in the 5,000m B division, the 19-year-old Thornhill native and Markham Speed Skating Club member was paired against Norimasa Zaike of Japan and maintained his pace throughout the race to outskate his opponent in a time of 6:44.12.
Belchos’ time was five seconds ahead of Zaike and a half second faster than in his debut a week earlier in Berlin.
A member of the Canadian development team, Belchos will be in Moscow this weekend for his third ISU World Cup event where he will be joined by fellow Markham Speed Skating Club member Andrew Godbout for the 10,000m competition.
Belchos is the current Canadian junior men’s record holder in the 10,000m.
