Two Markham teams set for junior volleyball final

The Unionville High School Wolves and Milliken Mills Secondary School Knights advanced to the York Region Athletic Association junior boys’ tier one volleyball final after winning their semifinal games at the YRAA Tournament at Richmond Hill High School Wednesday.

In pool games, the Wolves defeated Aurora High School 2-0 (25-14, 25-17), split with Cardinal Carter Catholic High School (25-14, 24-26) and swept Toronto District Christian School 2-0 (25-18, 25-16).

Facing Dr. G.W. Williams Secondary School in their semifinal match, the Wolves prevailed 2-0 (25-18, 25-23).

The Knights won their three pool play matches over Dr. G.W. Williams 2-0 (25-21, 25-20), Pierre Elliott Trudeau Secondary School 2-0 (25-21, 25-21) and Richmond Hill Secondary School 2-0 (25-21, 25-20). In their semifinal match against Cardinal Carter, the Knights prevailed 2-0 (25-16, 25-15).

The Wolves and Knights were to have met in yesterday’s final at Thornlea Secondary School in Thornhill.

Marauder girls advance to today’s b-ball semifinals

The Markham District High School Marauders senior girls basketball team advanced to today’s tier 1 YRAA semifinal with a 33-29 win yesterday over Community Hebrew Academy in quarterfinal action in the new Bill Crothers Secondary School gymnasiums in Unionville.

Kathleen Hughes led the Marauders with 10 points, including the final four points that allowed Markham to take the lead.

The team trailed 9-5 after the first quarter and 17-16 at the half.

The Marauders were to face the winner of the St. Theresa of Lisieux and Dr. J.M. Denison. Today’s semifinal will be played at 2 p.m. at Bill Crothers. The finals take place at 7 p.m.

Senior Wolves spiked in volleyball semifinals

The Unionville High School Wolves senior boys’ volleyball team saw their season come to an end when they lost to host Sacred Heart Catholic High School 2-1 (20-25, 25-20, 15-12) in the semifinals of Tuesday’s YRAA Tier One Tournament.

The Wolves advanced to the semifinals after losing their first pool play match to Thornlea Secondary School 2-0 (25-16, 25-18) but rebounded to defeat Richmond Hill High School 2-0 (25-21, 25-20) and Alexander Mackenzie High School 2-0 (25-23, 25-15).

Thornlea Secondary School was to have met Sacred Heart Catholic High School in yesterday’s final.
