For the first time since 1921, Ontario residents voted in a referendum.

Residents were asked which electoral system they preferred, the current system of first past the post, or mixed member proportional representation, a system which would allow voters to cast two ballots, one for a party and one for the local candidate.

Results were not to be counted until after the election ballots are all tabulated. The referendum results aren’t likely to be released until this morning.

The Electoral System Referendum Act requires election and referendum ballots be counted separately. At one of the polling stations in Thornhill, several voters were unhappy with the lack of information they received about the referendum.

“It was an excellent idea (the referendum) that should have been better presented to the public,” Annie Noa Kent said.

Live referendum results will be available on the Elections Ontario website at www.elections.on.ca

The site will detail the number of votes cast for each referendum choice, the cumulative totals and the number of polling places reporting.
