Teenagers get a chance to showcase their creative side at the Vaughan Public Libraries 19th annual Early Harvest awards.
The Oct. 7 award reception features artwork from students aged 12 to18 from schools all across the GTA. The categories of entry are writing, photography, painting and sketching and there are 24 award winners in all.
Margie Singleton, CEO of Vaughan Public Libraries and master of ceremonies for the event, said she is excited about the affair. Some of the winners are returning contestants and others are new entries.
Christine Beauchamp, 14, of Kleinburg, is the third-place winner for digitally manipulated photography and is brand new to the competition.
Kelley Armstrong, a best-selling author in Canada, judged the short story category, Thornhill poet I.B. Iskov picked the poetry winners, David West, of West Photography, judged the photographs, and Mirella Tersigni, from A Stroke of Art - Inspirational Art Studio determined the winner of the painting and sketching section.
Andrea Karakowski, youth advocate for the library, said that each year the response from students continues to grow. The Early Harvest awards ceremony is a closed event for winners and their families.
A magazine featuring the winners work will be available at all libraries beginning Wednesday.
