Keely Grasser

Itching to know what will be on the stage at the City Playhouse Theatre this season?

You can now pick up your copy of the 2008-2009 season brochure at any Vaughan public library or community centre.

“The City Playhouse Theatre is entering its fifth season providing wonderful theatre, dance and musical productions,” Vaughan Mayor Linda Jackson said.

“Audiences will enjoy performances showcasing professional and community-based talent.”

The season will open in September with a three-week run of the Italian-Canadian comedy Mambo Italiano. It tells the hilarious story of two Italian families whose old world values clash with their children’s new world ones.

In November, Aurora’s Marquee Productions will bring beloved classic Peter Pan to the stage.

Come early December, the City Youth Players will offer its first of the season: Once on This Island, a modern retelling of fairy tale The Little Mermaid.

Celebrate the holidays with one of several seasonal shows, including Chanukah Live 2008: Chanukah Jam!, the Nutcracker, and Celebrate the Holidays with George St. Kitts and Friends.

The new year will bring the return of the City Playhouse’s Green Reel Environmental Film Festival, featuring over 20 international films, live entertainment and vendors.

Marquee Productions will bring Man of La Mancha to the Playhouse in February.

Also that month, the North York Players will perform its environmentally-themed update on the classic play Iolanthe, called the Fairy and the Federalist.

City Youth Players will bring musical favourite Annie to the theatre in March.

Marquee productions will bring the season to a close with its production of Anne of Green Gables, the musical, in April. The Playhouse will also host many children’s performances.

New this season, the theatre presents Learning Through the Arts, a series that features education-focused shows for school-age children up to Grade 8.

The theatre is also launching a new workshop series for adults, in addition to their theatre courses and camps for children and youth.

Tickets for these shows are on sale now at the City Playhouse box office by calling 905-882-SHOW (7469) or visit cityplayhouse.ca for more details.

The theatre is at 1000 New Westminster Dr.
