Morey Hirsch scored a goal with five minutes remaining in regulation time to propel the Toronto Canada Moose to a 6-5 season-opening win over the Ontario Lightning Rams in Greater Metro Junior A Hockey League action Sunday at the Thornhill Community Centre.

Mike Chase, Joseph Santino, Gianmarco Aiell, Christopher Trauzzi and Robert Lee accounted for the Moose goals.

The Moose, which is a team based in Thornhill, outshot the Rams 48-27.

While pleased in winning their season opener in front of an appreciative audience, Moose coach Yvon Charron acknowledged there are several aspects his club must refine if they hope to continue to show progression.

“It’s a good start to a long season,” he said.

The Moose are off until Saturday when they host the league’s College Showcase tournament.

The team will play two games during the single-day competition with a match up at noon against the two-time league champions, Bradford Rattlers and then at 7:30 p.m. versus the Innisfil Lakers.
