Newmarket Fencing Club members Veronica Ibarra and Evan McDonnell claimed bronze medals at the Brock Open fencing tournament on the weekend at Brock University in St. Catharines.
Competing in women's under-17 epee category, Ibarra dropped a 15-7 semifinal decision to eventual gold medallist Vivian Poon of the Toronto Fencing Club.
National team member Ilyas Khamis, also from the Toronto Fencing Club, edged McDonnell 15-13 in a men's under-17 semifinal epee match on his way to a gold medal.
Reid 13th as Villanova romps to NCAA women's crown
Junior Sheila Reid of Newmarket finished 13th in the women's field to help the Villanova Wildcats to victory in the women's team standings at the NCAA cross-country running championships Monday in Terre Haute, In.
Reid, whose season already included a victory in the Big East championship, was one of four Wildcats to finish among the top 24 racers in the 255-runner field for the six-kilometre race. The Sacred Heart Crusaders' graduate and current member of the Newmarket Huskies Track Club completed the course in 20 minutes, 16.3 seconds.
Villanova entered the NCAA final as the No. 2-ranked team in the country behind the overwhelming favourite University of Washington Huskies. The Florida State Seminoles placed second with the Huskies third.
The University of Illinois' Angela Bizzarro finished first.
Reid's teammate Amanda Marino, also a junior, finished sixth (20:02.4) as Villanova claimed its eighth title and first since 1998.
It was the eighth team title for Villanova and first since 1998.
Central York girls host weekend tournament
The Central York Girls Hockey Association hosts its third annual house league tournament starting tomorrow at the Magna Centre in Newmarket.
More than 60 teams are slated to compete in eight divisions, ranging from novice to senior, during in the three-day event that wraps up Sunday afternoon. Championship games face off at 1 p.m.

Hurricanes, Red Wings tussle; Tigers pay Vees visit
The Newmarket Hurricanes will shoot for their fourth straight victory Thursday when the Hamilton Red Wings visit the Ray Twinney Complex in Central Canadian Hockey League action.
Game time is 7:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Aurora Tigers travel to Kingston Thursday to face the first-place Voyageurs in Ontario Junior A Hockey League action. The Tigers return home Friday (7:30 p.m.) to host the Vaughan Vipers at the Aurora Community Centre.
Former Hurricanes' sniper repeats for ECAC honour
For the second time this season, former Newmarket Hurricanes forward David McIntyre has been named the Eastern College Athletic Conference player of the week.
The Pefferlaw resident collected five points last weekend and is on an eight-game point streak as the Colgate Raiders split games against the No. 13 Quinnipiac Bobcats and 18th-ranked Princeton Tigers.
The senior has 110 career points to rank 38th all-time in scoring for the Colgate program.
