Big day for female university hockey players

Heather Hughes is making an immediate impact on the fortunes of the Quinnipiac University Bobcats women's hockey team.

The Stouffville resident and first-year forward was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Hockey Rookie of the Week after her four-point performance against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute last Saturday.

In that contest, which the Bobcats prevailed 6-1, Hughes scored three goals and earned an assist on another.

One day earlier, the Stouffville District Secondary School graduate contributed key defensive plays that included penalty-killing duties in the Connecticut school's 3-0 win over Union.

Hughes is the younger sister of Bobby Hughes, who plays with the New York Islanders' American Hockey League team in Bridgeport, Ct.

As well, her older sister, Hayley, is in her junior year at Cornell University and is a member of its women's hockey team.

Crago, Knox anchor Golden Hawks' win

Two Stouffville residents played an instrumental role in helping the Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks women's ice hockey team to their fifth win in as many outings last Saturday.

First-year forward Brittany Crago scored a goal and veteran netminder Liz Knox stopped all 31 shots directed her way en route to posting her third shutout of the season to propel the Golden Hawks to a 6-0 road win over the University of Toronto last Saturday.

Golf pro Down Under

Henry Brunton became the first Canadian golf professional to share his teaching ideas to the Australian PGA members during a recent 10-day tour through Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney. He was the featured guest presenter of the 2009 Australian PGA Coaching Series.

The 44-year-old Stouffville resident is the Royal Canadian Golf Association national men's coach and Canadian Professional Golf Association master professional.

Included in Brunton's lecture were excerpts from his new book, Journey to Excellence, The Young Golfers Complete Guide to Achievement and Personal Growth.

AE's win close one

A goal by Taylor Peterson and stellar netminding from B.J. Ivanovski proved to be the difference as the Stouffville peewee AE Clippers edged Newmarket 1-0 in their OMHA contest in Newmarket Tuesday.

Justin Pickup and Ryan Daniels earned assists.

Novice A's edged

The Stouffville novice A Clippers gave Nobleking a run for their money but came up short in a 3-2 decision during their OMHA contest at the Stouffville Arena Sunday.

Mike Hary and Matthieu Kovac each scored once in the third period for the Clippers.

Cam Watson and Nicholas Olidis each earned assists.
