Gymnasts earn medals
Maria Graziano, Lydia Tranter and Logan Range
claimed silver medals at the Orangeville Spring Fling Invitational gymnastics
meet last weekend.
All three athletes train at the Shenderey Gymnastics Centre
in Newmarket.
Competing at Level 3 (12-13 years), Range placed second in
the uneven bars and balance beam to highlight her performance.
Tranter (Level 2, 11-12 years) scored top marks on the
uneven bars, was second in floor and third on the balance beam.
Meanwhile, Graziano (Level 3, 11 years) combined a second-place
showing on uneven bars with third-place finishes on vault and balance beam.
Ariana Ranjbar took bronze in Level 2 for nine-year-olds.
Redmen, Tigers take best shots at OHF titles
Top prize is up for grabs as the Newmarket Redmen and Aurora
Tigers teams bid to stickhandle their way to Ontario Hockey Federation titles
starting Friday.
On the home front, Newmarket
kicks off its role as host for the midget double-A championship tournament at
the Ray Twinney Complex with a Friday game against the Greater Toronto Hockey
League champion North York Knights. Game time is 10 a.m.
Also participating in the three-day event are Alliance champion London Jr. Knights, Hearst Elans of the
Northern association and Belle River Rink Rats, winners of the Ontario association
title.
The five-team tournament continues Friday and Saturday with
semifinals slated for Sunday at 8 and 10 a.m. The gold medal game is at 3 p.m.
Meanwhile, Newmarket is
competing at the midget single-A championships in Stratford after winning the OMHA championship
with a five-game series victory over the Woolwich Wildcats.
Newmarket,
38-5-3 in regular season and playoff action, begins play Friday at 10 a.m.
against the North York Knights. The Redmen also face Woodstock Navy Vets in an
afternoon match.
In Timmins,
the Aurora Tigers vie for the peewee double-A title starting Friday at 10 a.m.
against the London Jr. Knights.
The Tigers face host Timmins Rampage in an afternoon
contest. West Ferris and Humber Valley Sharks
round out the field.
Aurora
won its berth by claiming the OMHA title in a four-game series victory over the
Oakville Rangers.
All tournaments include champions from the Greater Toronto, Alliance and Northern Ontario
associations.
