The fight to save the Dunlap Observatory is going to Queen’s Park.

Those fighting to preserve the 190 acres in the centre of Richmond Hill are holding a rally Jan. 16 at noon on the steps of the provincial legislature in downtown Toronto.

A petition will be presented to the province. Organizers then hope to march to the nearby University of Toronto campus to present the same documents to school officials. U of T owns the facility.

The university’s governing council declared the observatory surplus in October and put the lands up for sale.

The closing date for bids is in mid-February.

In the meantime, Ontario’s Conservation Review Board will soon be hearing an application by the Town of Richmond Hill to designate the buildings on the site as heritage structures.
