Hot drinks, thanks dished out to rapid bus commuters this week

YRT/Viva commuters will be offered a hot chocolate or coffee this week to thank them for putting up with a strike by transit drivers earlier this fall.

The Regional Municipality of York is dishing out the hot drinks and personal messages of thanks Tuesday through Thursday following the return of Viva service this weekend.

“During morning and afternoon rush hours, YRT/Viva staff will be stationed at terminals and busy intersections throughout the region to offer a warm pick-me-up and thank customers for their patience during the Viva strike, as well as their continued support and ridership,” said region spokesperson Kim MacGillivray.

Viva service resumed Saturday, one day after Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 113 drivers reached an agreement with Veolia Transportation.

Veolia is under contract to the region to provide Viva bus rapid transit service. Viva services had been suspended since Sept. 25 when the 160 Viva drivers rejected a tentative deal and went on strike.

All Viva and YRT routes are now operating on regular schedules.

Viva provides five bus rapid transit routes along major York Region corridors, including Yonge Street and Hwy. 7, with links to the TTC subway at Don Mills, Finch and Downsview stations.

The 90 Viva vehicles provide service to 35,000 boardings each weekday and 29,000 boardings each weekend.
