What is believed to be a fake warranty company is targetting York Region residents’ financial information.
During the past month, residents were contacted at home about buying an extended warranty for their vehicle, York Regional Police said.
The caller identified himself as an employee of a warranty company and asked for a credit card number to purchase the warranty.
If you are contacted, the caller may have some of your personal information, police warned.
Local dealerships said this is not a normal business practice, police said.
The dealers believe the caller represents a fake company and has obtained customer records fraudulently in an effort to obtain credit card numbers, police said.
If you have information about this scam, call fraud investigators at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 6618 or Phone Busters, the Canadian anti-fraud call centre, at 1-888-495-8501 or
info@phonebusters.comAvoid becoming a victim. Check your warranty details with your dealership. They will provide current warranty status for your vehicle. Check out any caller by requesting written information, a call back number, references and time to think over the offer. Do not be pressured to send money or provide a credit card number.
