What’s in a name?

Plastered all over Newmarket and Aurora, Dorian Baxter’s signs read Progressive Conservative, when the party is officially called the Progressive Canadian Party.

Both parties are the same, according to Mr. Baxter, although three years ago, the party changed its name to Progressive Canadian after a complaint from the Conservative Party.

Elections Canada does not regulate advertising content, a riding spokesperson said.

A hyphen was added to Progressive-Conservative to make the name an adjective and differentiate the name from the former political party, Mr. Baxter said. But his lawn signs don’t include the hyphen.

Mr. Baxter said he didn’t have time to get new signs made and didn’t want to let competitors get a jump on signage.

“I refused to let Lois (Brown’s) signs go unchallenged,” he said.

New signs are on the way, which will be more colourful and have the words Progressive Canadian in large font, Mr. Baxter said, adding the old signs will be removed.

Green Party’s Hubbers will end campaign early

Mother always said not to talk politics at the dinner table, so the Green Party decided to cease canvassing during the Thanksgiving weekend.

As of Oct. 10 at 5 p.m., Green Party candidate Glenn Hubbers and his campaign volunteers will stop knocking on doors and calling constituents.

Thanksgiving is about more than a statutory holiday. It’s a time for family, Mr. Hubbers said.
