When you do something for yourself, it dies with you, but when you do something for someone else, it lives on as a legacy.

That’s this year’s cancer ride motto.

Motorcyclists unite Sept. 14 to beat all types of cancer.

“It’s a blanket,” said Attila Demjen, the host and videographer for the event. “Everyone is touched by cancer.”

The 200-kilometre B.E.A.T. Ride for Cancer starts at Freak-N-Leather at 10 a.m. Participants can register that day at 8:30 a.m.

Awaiting riders when they return from the three-hour ride is a silent auction at Freak-N-Leather.

Last year, the event drew more than 60 riders. The goal is have about 100 riders and raise more than $10,000 for cancer research and support programs for those living with cancer, said Joanne Witt, fundraising co-ordinator for the Canadian Cancer Society’s Holland River Unit in Newmarket.

Along the way, as  motors purr on the pavement, Mr. Demjen will capture the spirit and mood of the ride, creating a legacy for those suffering with or who have died of cancer.

“You may not see the passenger,” he said. “But each rider has a loved one with them on the ride.”
