Peewee Jays pull off title magicDrew Bryan drove in the tying run with a double and scored on a throwing error during a botched rundown as the Aurora Jays rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning to claim the Baseball Ontario peewee single-A championship Sunday in Windsor with a 4-3 victory over the Peterborough Tigers.
The victory capped a weekend in which the Jays won five of six games, including a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the Waterloo Tigers in semifinal play.
Aurora reeled off wins over the host Walker Homesite Hawks (7-4), London Southwest Scorpions (13-12) and Waterloo Tigers (15-4) before losing to Peterborough (25-12).
The Jay displayed resilience in bouncing back from three games in a span of eight hours Saturday, including the loss to Peterborough.
“The key for us was that our pitching was great as was our batting in a very dramatic way,” said head coach Dave Giroux, whose team posted a 14-3-1 record in regular season action. “But it was remarkable we could come out (Sunday) and play so well.”
Relief pitcher Scott Taborek retired Peterborough batters in order in the bottom of the seventh inning to preserve the victory.
In the semifinal, Aurora rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning and reliever Daniel Jones struck out three batters after Waterloo put a runner on third base with none out.
