A Thornhill hockey player was injured in a car accident in Kitchener Saturday night.

Kevin Hudes, 19, was one of five people in a vehicle driven by Kitchener Rangers teammate Mike Mascioli that was hit by a pickup truck in an intersection around 7 p.m.

Mascioli, Hudes and two other passengers were treated for injuries and released from hospital that night. The other passenger was transferred to a Hamilton hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The 18-year-old driver of the pickup truck was not seriously hurt. He has been charged with failing to stop for a red light.

“It is the type of telephone call that you never want to receive,” Rangers chief operating officer Steve Bienkowski told ontariohockeyleague.com. “Although any type of injury scares you, you are thankful that all the young people affected by this were not more seriously injured.”

Hudes had two goals for the Rangers in a 7-6 Ontario Hockey League victory over the Owen Sound Attack Friday in Kitchener. He has six points in seven games this season.

The six-foot three-inch forward helped the Markham Waxers reach the Ontario Junior Hockey League final last spring. He previously played for the Windsor Spitfires in the OHL and the Pickering Panthers of the OJHL.

Other York Region and area players on the Rangers’ roster include ex-Thornhill Thunderbird Brandon Mashinter (Bradford), former Markham Waxer 2008 rookie of the year Michael Catenacci (Woodbridge), Chris MacKinnon (Aurora), 2008 first-round draft pick Jeff Skinner (Markham) and Myles Barbieri (Kleinburg).
