The Markham Mariners peewees advanced to the Ontario Baseball Association AA semifinals before they were eliminated by Tecumseh 12-8 in Niagara Falls last weekend.

Coming off their championship victory in the 52nd Lions CNE Peewee Baseball Tournament one day earlier, the Mariners opened the double elimination provincials with a 6-3 loss to Burlington.

However, they rallied to reel off three straight victories over Brantford 4-2, North Toronto 17-1 and host Niagara Falls 11-3 to qualify for the semifinals.

“We played eight games in five days (at the CNE) and playing two games Friday and two Saturday it really took a toll on our pitching.”

Despite losing in the provincial semifinals, Harvey was proud of the way his charges performed during the season. “The boys came a long ways. To win the CNE tournament was a great accomplishment,” he said.

Harvey noted next season his club will move up into the minor bantam ranks. Other players who contributed to the run into the semifs are: Peter Apostolopoulos, Mark Davidson, Anthony Duen, Christian Envidia, Hunter Greenough, Brett Harvey, Matthew Nishimura, Tyler Pickering, Ty Rombis and Danny Sutharman. Other coaches included: Mike Pickering, Wayne Nishimura and Mike Davidson. Darshy Sutharman was the club’s administrator.
