There’s only one thing better than ice cream on a warm summer day.

That’s free ice cream.

A new ice cream shop is giving away free scoops to the first 1,000 customers this Labour Day weekend.

The Village Ice Cream Shop, on Hwy. 7 near 9th Line, will give away ice cream Saturday, Sunday and Monday, while supplies last.

The shop carries the Kawartha Lakes dairy brand, which features 36 flavours, said Anthony Santen, an Ajax resident who is opening the store with his wife, Victoria Jimenez.

“It’s a real sort of old-fashioned business,” said Mr. Santen, who says customers can get any flavour of ice cream they want during the free single scoop giveaway this weekend.

They soon hope to have their frozen yogurt available, too.

Mr. Santen conceded late summer is not the best time to open an ice cream shop.

“We were buried in paperwork by the Town of Markham,” he said, something that delayed the opening.

Giving away free ice cream is an effort to draw in customers and make up for some of the warm weather sales they’ve missed out on, he said.
