What if everyone in Georgina read the same book? The Georgina Public Libraries launched One Book, One Community April 17.

“The idea is to build community spirit by encouraging everyone to share the experience of reading the same book,” library spokesperson Ruth Berry said.

The book is Silverwing by Canadian author Kenneth Oppel.

Mr. Oppel has received numerous literary awards for this 10-year-old story of courage and survival.

Silverwing is the first volume in an adventure trilogy set in the nocturnal world of bats.

Mr. Oppel is visiting Georgina Nov. 14 as the event’s grand finale, she said.

In honour of One Book, One Community, the Pefferlaw, Sutton, and Keswick branches are hosting a number of events during the coming months.

“Spread the word about reading Silverwing to your mom, dad, grandparents, brothers, sisters, caregivers, neighbours, kids, students and co-workers,” Ms Berry said.

“Let us put Georgina on the map by having the largest number of people read one book.”
