Friends and family of the late Len Westcott will keep his memory alive with their third annual memorial hockey tournament Saturday at the Sutton Arena.
The puck drops at 9 a.m. and there will be hockey action all day.
The public is welcome to watch the games.
Admission is a donation, co-organizer Reg Prince said.
The benefitting charity is the Georgina Cares Fund, which helps needy children.
There will be an on-ice presentation to Georgina Cares by Mr. Westcott’s son, Brandon, organizer Reg Prince said.
Brandon will also remain as Eagles’ captain.
Last year, the tourney raised $6,700.
The teams taking part this year all bear the names of The Len Westcott Eagles on the front and Georgina Cares on the backs of their jerseys along with the number 15 worn by Mr. Westcott when he played over the years.
Mr. Westcott was a longtime businessman who left this world way too soon, said co-organizer David McGrail.
“Len was known by many and had the face and smile you couldn’t forget. Len supported youth in the area and sponsored many a sports team.”
Since 2006, Mr. McGrail has worked with Reg Prince and Kevin McCabe to keep Mr. Westcott’s name alive by organizing successful hockey and golf tournaments and giving the proceeds to Georgina Cares.
In that time, four events for this charity were able to donate more $21,000 on Mr. Westcott’s behalf.
Without the ongoing support of members of the community, local businesses and the media, these events would not have been as successful, Mr. McGrail said.
The winner of the tournament will receive a memorial cup with the name inscribed.
A dinner, dance, raffles and silent auction will be held after the games at 7 p.m.
The cost is $20.
