Guggino sweeps to gold at judo Rendez-Vous meetJunior
Renee Guggino defeated two-time defending national champion Laurie
Wiltshire of Alberta to capture the gold medal in the senior women’s
52-kilogram category at Rendez-Vous 2008 judo tournament in Montreal on
the weekend.
The victory capped a string of three straight victories for the Newmarket resident, who won all three bouts by ippon.
Guggino is preparing this week for the junior world judo championships Oct. 23 to 26 in Bangkok, Thailand.
Register until Nov. 1 for +55 York GamesEntries are being accepted for a variety of activities for the York Region +55 Games across York Region next month.
In
total, 13 events will be held during the Games, including seven
sanctioned events that will produce competitors for Winterfest in
Brockville in February.
Registration forms are available at municipal offices and seniors centres across the region. Deadline for entries is Nov. 1.

to the Ray Twinney Complex tonight to face the slumping Newmarket
Hurricanes in Ontario Junior Hockey League action.
Newmarket has
lost five of its past six games to slip to a share of fifth place with
the Cobourg Cougars in the eight-team division.
St. Mike’s skated to a 3-1 victory in the only previous meeting of the teams this season.
Game time is 7:30 p.m.
