What describes Canada better than bilingualism and hockey?
Put the two together and voilá, you get the École secondaire catholique Renaissance charity hockey tournament.
The new French high school, at the corner of Bathurst Street and Bloomington Sideroad, is hosting a charity hockey tournament at the Aurora Community Centre April 2. All proceeds from the tournament go to raise money for students who cannot afford school activities.
“There’s always the assumption that people here are well off,” explained Denyse LeBrun, co-op co-ordinator at the high school.
The school hopes to raise $10,000 for a perpetual fund to help fund sport activities, educational trips and art outings.
The hockey game will feature a mixture of teachers, parents, NHL alumni, actors and the odd NASCAR driver.
Special guests include Michael Landsberg, Graham Abbey and Darren Mallard, plus NHL alumni Jim Thomson, Dan Daoust, Mark Osbourne, Jimmy Jones, Stu Grimson, Peter Zezel, Wes Jarvis, Ric Nattress and John Druce are scheduled to attend.
John Graham will have his NASCAR in the parking lot at 6:30 p.m. and there will be an opportunity for autographs and photographs before the game.
“We want students to know about the fund and (we want) parents to feel more secure about funding,” Ms LeBrun said. “We wanted to combine fundraising and Canadian entertainment.”
