Trustees not ready to determine long-term future of school, yet
By: Teresa Latchford
Dr. G.W. Williams Secondary School will stay put for now.
At a recent York Region District School Board meeting, school trustees decided, once again, not to rush into a decision between constructing the replacement building for the high school on Dunning Avenue or at a sight on Bayview Avenue, board spokesperson Ross Virgo said.
“The school will continue to operate on its present site,” he said. “Emergency repairs will be done to keep the school open and safe, but long-term repairs will not be completed.”
In July, school trustees decided to defer the decision until the fall after receiving an impact report and holding public information sessions. The same trustees have now decided to defer once more until they have a better idea of how quickly the new residential developments are going to be completed east of Bayview.
Although no decision about the fate of the high school has been made, board members also approved the purchase of the Bayview property, which has been zoned for a school.
“The board wants to keep their options open,” Mr. Virgo explained. “If we don’t relocate the high school to that site, the property would definitely not go to waste.”
In the future, if the decision is made to build the replacement high school on the Dunning Avenue site, the Bayview site will be held for a possible elementary school or to be used to meet the needs of the community.
